The Reviewer Review: Legally Blonde UK Tour, Manchester Opera House, Thursday 20th September 2012

Words by Caroline Greenwood

We’ve all done something crazy for a guy, right? Sent them love letters, written mushy poems, stalked them to an Ivy League school… Well, maybe not that last one, but I think we can all sympathise. Based on the 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Luke Wilson, Legally Blonde the Musical follows the story of 'pink' law student Elle Woods, as she pursues her ex-beau across America, in the quest for love and acceptance.

Currently playing to packed audiences throughout the UK, this new touring production sees Gareth Gates and Jennifer Ellison take up the roles of Warner and Paulette, whilst Faye Brookes and Iwan Lewis star as the leads. Ellison in particular, is the unexpected surprise of the show, leaving behind her soap roots and bringing an unquestionable vibrancy to the performance, also backing it up with strong vocals. Similarly, as Warner, Gates also proves himself to be deserving of his previous West End fame, demonstrating a charismatic character performance, which is on a par with any seasoned professional. However, that said, the real stars of the show are undoubtedly Brookes and Lewis who dazzle as Elle and Emmett.

Brookes and Lewis as Elle and Emmett

As we know, Welsh boys rule the West End and it would seem that touring productions are no different. Playing the sharp and bookish law student; Emmett, Iwan Lewis exudes a bashful charm, which is not only endearing but makes you completely fall for his character - certainly making him one to watch in the future.

Faye Brookes as Elle Woods
Moving on to Elle...Much like Glinda in Wicked, the role of Elle is one which I feel actresses have to tread a careful line with, balancing between perfection and excess. In the past I have heard both, but Brookes is something else. Her performance as Elle is sweet and sensitive, perfectly portraying the character’s scrappy determinism, whilst evoking sympathy and bringing a smile to your face. Her natural flair as a comedienne,  makes Brookes the highlight of this performance - long may her success continue.

Legally Blonde is fun, fast and full of life - well worth a trip to the theatre if you get a chance!

Catch Legally Blonde on tour across the UK until 6th October 2012
